'Rachel mourns her children. She refuses to be consoled because her children are no more' (Yirmiyahu 31:15)? The Zohar (Vayachi 228b) writes, "Whenever the world needs mercy, Mother Rachel achieves it for them; more than anyone else". Every night at midnight, dozens of scholars from Jerusalem and from surrounding neighborhoods join the 'Mama Rachel' (Rachel the Matriarch) at her gravesite, to mourn together with her, as she mourns the sufferings of her descendants; the Jewish people. After they mourn, the scholars study Torah at her graveside until the morning. Their prayers and Torah scholarship in this holy spot, brings mercy and immense kindness upon the entire Jewish nation, and hastens their final redemption. |
